Chasing waterfalls on the Valley of the Waters track

13 March 2018

Last Updated on 3 September 2026

Nestled in the Wentworth Falls Valley, just a short 90-minute drive from the bustle of Sydney’s CBD into the vibrant Blue Mountains, the Valley of the Waters track offers more waterfalls in a single walk (and single hour) than you’re likely to find in many other places. Always on the hunt for unique vantage points and new activities in one of my favourite places in all of Australia, my Canberra-based friend Lucy and I hit the road this weekend to explore more of the Blue Mountains, tackling this quick but beautiful walk on our first day.
Queen Victoria Lookout

All the details: Valley of the Waters

Getting there
As with most walks in the Blue Mountains, the best (and really only) way to reach the trail is by car. There is a small carpark near the start of the track, but parking tends to overflow onto the nearby residential streets.
Starting point
The trail begins just to the right of the Conservation Hut, a little café in the Wentworth Falls area.
Ending point
Backtrack to the Conservation Hut
Total distance
~ 1.5 km return
Walking time
1hr total
Difficulty
This is a reasonably steep track with slippery sections and a number of ladders, but it’s still fairly short and therefore not too challenging
Accessibility
Spotty mobile reception (as in the Blue Mountains in general), café with maps and information at the start of the track
Food & water
Drinks and snacks at the Conservation Hut
Variations
It’s possible to continue past Empress Falls to another 2 waterfalls (if the track is open)
My rating
6/10 for the lush greenery and a few stunning lookouts, but the view of Empress Falls was obstructed by several dozen people on a canyoning tour

Conservation Hut

From the Conservation Hut, a bustling café overlooking the beautiful Wentworth Falls valley, there is a sign for the Valley of the Waters track on your right side. Either take this path and follow signs from here to the Short Cut Track, or just take the path to the right of the hut for Empress Falls, as both of these paths converge at the Short Cut. On either trail, the path winds steeply downhill over a series of wooden steps and past a number of well-signed forks, enjoying the cover of the dense forest which keeps the walk cool and the sunburn risk rather low.

Ferns, ferns, ferns

Queen Victoria Lookout

Before long, there is a sign for the Queen Victoria Lookout posted on the left side of the trail. Follow the path down just a few more steps to reach this fenced-off point, which offers simply wonderful views over the Blue Mountains and their characteristically orange cliffs, lush eucalyptus forests, and strangely Jurassic Park-esque palms. Often, these viewpoints that require a little effort to reach are nearly empty compared to the more accessible and well-known lookouts (Echo Point), so it’s possible to enjoy the scenery all to yourself before continuing on further into the valley.

Empress Lookout & Empress Falls

Hopping back onto the main track after Queen Victoria Lookout, the walk continues to descend, eventually reaching a series of metal ladders that have been bolted into the rock to aid in climbing. A number of small cascades appear on the side of the trail; of course, the trade-off for clear weather and dry ground is that there isn’t quite as much water flowing down the rocks, but they are still plenty beautiful. Not long into the ladder descent, Empress Falls is visible below. I was rather disappointed to find a large tour group abseiling down the falls, obstructing our view and also causing quite a bit of commotion, but it was a lovely sight even with the ropes and tourists in the way. Unfortunately, the little track that continues a couple hundred metres beyond Empress Falls to reach the final view of Sylvia Falls was closed for repair when we visited, but I am assured that it is worth the continued effort. After enjoying the forest and falls views, we turned around and made our way back up all the ladders and steps, a fairly steep climb back to the car that left us puffed but ready for more adventure.

Overall impressions: Valley of the Waters

Although we didn’t get to see the final falls on our walk, Empress Falls and Queen Victoria Lookout were more than enough to justify even the steep, slick descent into the forest and the rather demanding climb back out. Many walks in the Blue Mountains wind past a series of lookouts with more or less the same scenery, but the Valley of the Waters track certainly provides variety in its views of the mountains, striking flora, and glowing waterfalls, all within a management one-hour walk. I’m not ready to say it’s my favourite hike in the whole region, but I’d still happily recommend it and even repeat it myself when the last section of the trail is open.

  • Neither of us has ever been the type to fantasise about our someday-wedding. We didn’t have a colour palette or a dream venue or a pinterest board (apparent blasphemy), and when we got engaged nearly 20 months ago, we had truly no idea if we’d be able to pull off an international wedding with friends scattered all over the world.

But the idea for a wild Icelandic wedding grew out of our deep love for this island— somewhere we feel endlessly inspired, returning again & again to wander remote valleys and scramble up dramatic mountains and camp beneath glaciers.

It became our dream that we’d bring all our favourite people together here not just for one evening, but for an epic week-long adventure— the most Brooke & James version of a wedding we could imagine.

And so we rented a huge party house (with a 20-person hot tub 🔥) in a quiet northern fjord and hoped it would all come together.

We soaked, we hiked, we danced, we saw about one million puffins, we ate & drank like it was going out of style, and we enjoyed long days with everyone who travelled SO FARKING FAR (up to 35hrs 🇦🇺) to be here with us. Our hearts have never been so full.

There are a million thank yas owed to our friends for making this week possible. The way we had people out gathering flowers for our tables, cooking shared meals for the whole house, coordinating event prep long after we’d gone to bed, ironing our outfits, delivering amazing speeches (& officiating our wedding!), waking up early to do every single step of my hair and make-up, preparing SIX ROUNDS of themed cocktails, learning cords on the wedding day so we could have acoustic entrance music… we’re crying just writing this.

It finally makes sense why people say their wedding was the happiest day of their lives. We have never felt so loved, so supported, so genuinely grateful for the way people showed up for us this past week in Iceland.

We would’ve been happy getting married in a dank cave by ourselves (just for the love), but our friends truly made this the wedding of our dreams 🥹

& special shout-out to our friend & favourite photographer @norrisniman for always bringing the vibes
  • There was a time I thought that great adventures could only happen alone, and I was so worried to lose all of the wild, independent, adventurous parts of myself in a relationship.

Within just a few weeks of meeting each other, James seemed to sense this, and told me if I needed to go climb another Aconcagua alone, he’d sit at base camp and be my support team. In those early days, it felt like exactly what I’d always wanted to hear.

But I quickly found that I was so wrong about the ways this relationship would change my life. We’ve been together for nearly every minute of the last few years and I have never ONCE wished to be on the mountain alone.

The right person elevates your life in a million small & powerful & surprising & wonderful ways, and now all of my great adventures are even greater with my extremely cool husband right there next to me.

Cheers to a lifetime of venturing into the unknown together @jamesalsobeyond 🖤✨

  • One of the best-kept secrets in the Albanian Alps is Buni Jezercës, the Great Valley of Lakes ✨

With Peaks of the Balkans and countless day hikes passing through the neighbouring Ropojana Valley, Buni Jezercës feels totally untouched— yet it’s home to the tallest & most spectacular peaks in the range, ripe for the scrambling.

Of all the incredible places we experienced hiking through these mountains for 12 days, this was truly the highlight! I’m already planning a return trip with a tent so we can post up for a bit and climb everything in sight…

>>> On a related note, my Peaks of the Balkans planning guide is finally done!! It is LONG but totally worth the read for anyone looking to tackle the most epic version of POB!

  • Can you guess which photos are from which?!

After visiting two summers in a row, we’re convinced that Montenegro is the new Dolomites (that’s right, these are ALL from Montenegro!). Amazing trail infrastructure and incredible limestone peaks, but without the crowds 🤩🤩

Photos from Prokletije National Park, Maganik Mountains, and Durmitor National Park— we can’t wait to get back to explore more!!

  • And finally, some photos from the Montenegro section of our Peaks of the Balkans route!

We totally fell in love with the hiking in this country on our road trip last year (there are SO many amazing mountains here!!!), and the most recent adventure just cemented what we already knew: Montenegro is one of Europe’s most underrated hiking destinations.

  • The second-youngest country in the world and still flying under the radar for most travellers, Kosovo completely surprised us!

We spent 5 days hiking through Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park as part of our Peaks of the Balkans loop, and the limestone peaks, alpine lakes, newly-minted via ferrata routes, and warm Balkan hospitality were a genuine highlight. I have a feeling you’ll be seeing more of little Kosovo soon!

  • Just a few of my favourite photos from the Albania section of our 12-day Peaks of the Balkans hike! These days contained some of the biggest alpine scenery anywhere on the trail, and we were pretty star-struck as we hiked through Valbona, Theth, Prosllopit Pass, the Great Valley of Lakes, and up to the summit of Maja Bojës!

  • We just wrapped up an incredible 12-day Peaks of the Balkans circuit that brought us through 220km of the Accursed Mountains in Albania, Montenegro, and Kosovo, plus 7 additional summits off the standard route. And it was AMAZING!! 🍾🥂

This is the first multi-day hike I’ve done since my knee surgery last year, and there’s still a loongggggg road ahead to get back to where I was athletically… but this feels like a significant milestone on that journey.

And aside from the physical one, this year has taken me on a rather unexpected emotional journey, too. The peril of tying too much of your self-worth to any one activity is the inevitable sense of loss that results from *suddenly not being able to do that activity*. And I spent a lot of this past year asking myself “without the mountains and without the next harder summit, who even are you?”

Forced to experience life at a slower pace, to do things I would have previously dismissed as “too easy” and to find personal satisfaction in them anyway, a lot of unintended growth happened. I found a way to still be me on the easy route, or even on no route at all. Particularly as I navigate the realities of chronic injury and illness where the next surgery may be lurking just around the corner, this has brought me some peace.

But DANG, it feels really good to be here RIGHT NOW, doing what I love in this fragile but mobile body 🏔️🖤

Neither of us has ever been the type to fantasise about our someday-wedding. We didn’t have a colour palette or a dream venue or a pinterest board (apparent blasphemy), and when we got engaged nearly 20 months ago, we had truly no idea if we’d be able to pull off an international wedding with friends scattered all over the world.

There was a time I thought that great adventures could only happen alone, and I was so worried to lose all of the wild, independent, adventurous parts of myself in a relationship.

The right person elevates your life in a million small & powerful & surprising & wonderful ways, and now all of my great adventures are even greater with my extremely cool husband right there next to me.

Cheers to a lifetime of venturing into the unknown together @jamesalsobeyond 🖤✨

There was a time I thought that great adventures could only happen alone, and I was so worried to lose all of the wild, independent, adventurous parts of myself in a relationship.

One of the best-kept secrets in the Albanian Alps is Buni Jezercës, the Great Valley of Lakes ✨

Can you guess which photos are from which?!

And finally, some photos from the Montenegro section of our Peaks of the Balkans route!

We totally fell in love with the hiking in this country on our road trip last year (there are SO many amazing mountains here!!!), and the most recent adventure just cemented what we already knew: Montenegro is one of Europe’s most underrated hiking destinations.

We totally fell in love with the hiking in this country on our road trip last year (there are SO many amazing mountains here!!!), and the most recent adventure just cemented what we already knew: Montenegro is one of Europe’s most underrated hiking destinations.

The second-youngest country in the world and still flying under the radar for most travellers, Kosovo completely surprised us!
