Cape Queen Elizabeth: Discovering the incredible Bruny Island Arch

29 January 2019

Last Updated on 21 May 2023

Wind-whipped and delicately chiseled over thousands of years into intriguing geometric patterns, the layered cliffs and jagged rocks at Miles Beach were eventually worn away to form a perfect archway in the sand, looking directly onto the tumultuous Tasman Sea.

But Bruny Island’s dramatic coastal Arch is every bit as maddeningly alluring to behold as it is maddeningly difficult to find information about online… First entranced by an un-captioned photo on the front of a Southern Tasmania tourist map, I finally made it to the mysterious Cape Queen Elizabeth Arch, finding myself overwhelmed by scenery that was far better than I’d even been imagining.

All the details: Cape Queen Elizabeth Arch

GETTING THERE

Drive 30min from Hobart to Kettering and catch the Sealink across to Bruny Island (more details in this post)

STARTING POINT

The Cape Queen Elizabeth trailhead is located on Bruny Island Main Road (directly across from Bruny Island Honey)

TOTAL DISTANCE

6-7km return

WALKING TIME

2hrs if taking the bluff path at high tide, 1.25hrs if taking the beach path at low tide (including photo stops)

DIFFICULTY

Easy; at low tide, you can walk all the way to The Arch on a wide, flat trail, and even at high tide, there’s only about 10min of gentle uphill and a short section of downhill on the other side to reach the beach

SAFETY

This is such a well-graded, easy path that there’s no need to wear hiking boots (I did it in Tevas!) or carry trekking poles; do be sure to check the tides before setting off, as this will dictate which path you can safely take

AMENITIES

There is no water or other facilities at the trailhead, but several local shops are nearby (Bruny Island Honey right across the road)

MY RATING

5 STARS for an easy walk that brings you directly to the incredibly unique geometric Cape Queen Elizabeth Arch

Cape Queen Elizabeth

After an amazingly quick ferry ride from Kettering (just outside of Hobart) where we didn’t even have to hop out of the car, dad, Eileen, Callum, and I drive about 20min down Bruny Island Main Road to the Cape Queen Elizabeth trailhead, located directly across the street from Bruny Island Honey.

I’d been trawling the internet for days in search of information about the beautiful Arch that featured in so many of the brochures and maps I’d grabbed from the visitor centre in Hobart, and finally this morning, just in time for our visit today, I discovered that the Arch lies somewhere along the Cape Queen Elizabeth track. How far, we don’t know, and what impact the high tide will have on our view, we also don’t know.. but we set off anyway, optimistic that the stunning rock arch will make it all worthwhile.

From the carpark, we walk along a wide, well-graded sand trail for about 30 minutes before reaching the track junction. Given that I had estimated the hike to be just 20min each way, we are a bit surprised to pass people and learn that we have another 5km to go.

Since the tide is nearly at its highest point of the day, we also learn that we will need to take the higher route up and over Mars Bluff, backtracking a short distance along the beach to find the Arch. Luckily, though, the ascent and descent of Mars Bluff are not at all challenging and offer beautiful views of the coastline below, even if it is somewhat “smoked out” by the nearby bushfires.

Mars Bluff & The Arch

After descending Mars Bluff and making our way back along Miles Beach towards the rocks, we finally catch our first glimpse of the incredible Arch that brought us here. Wind tangling my hair into a nest and filing down my teeth, smoke hanging in the air, and significant cloud cover blocking out the sun, conditions today are less than ideal, but surprisingly none of it detracts from the Arch.

We spend the next 30min photographing every angle of this geological wonder, marvelling at just how secluded and almost secretive the spot has remained, despite its obvious appeal to travellers (or anyone with eyes).

It is only the promise of lunch at Bruny Island Cheese & Beer Co. that finally pulls us away, trudging back up Mars Bluff, down along the sandy track, and stepping back into our car with a swelling feeling of success.

Overall impressions: Cape Queen Elizabeth Arch

It was surprisingly challenging to find information about the Arch online, or even in one of the many brochures that have used its image as a cover, but the mystery of what we would discover at the end of the trail almost made the experience even better.

In low tide, it’s possible to walk a shorter and more direct route to the Arch, but even in high tide, this natural rock formation is primed and ready to be photographed. It may have been longer than the 20min walk I was anticipating, but the substantial rewards on arrival would merit a trail 10x this long.

This is truly one of the most unique spots in Tasmania, and possibly even in the world, so it is absolutely not to be missed when on Bruny Island!

Hi great article. The walk was very beautiful and we loved the Arch. It an 8km if you take the high tide route (we thought it was 6).

  • Neither of us has ever been the type to fantasise about our someday-wedding. We didn’t have a colour palette or a dream venue or a pinterest board (apparent blasphemy), and when we got engaged nearly 20 months ago, we had truly no idea if we’d be able to pull off an international wedding with friends scattered all over the world.

But the idea for a wild Icelandic wedding grew out of our deep love for this island— somewhere we feel endlessly inspired, returning again & again to wander remote valleys and scramble up dramatic mountains and camp beneath glaciers.

It became our dream that we’d bring all our favourite people together here not just for one evening, but for an epic week-long adventure— the most Brooke & James version of a wedding we could imagine.

And so we rented a huge party house (with a 20-person hot tub 🔥) in a quiet northern fjord and hoped it would all come together.

We soaked, we hiked, we danced, we saw about one million puffins, we ate & drank like it was going out of style, and we enjoyed long days with everyone who travelled SO FARKING FAR (up to 35hrs 🇦🇺) to be here with us. Our hearts have never been so full.

There are a million thank yas owed to our friends for making this week possible. The way we had people out gathering flowers for our tables, cooking shared meals for the whole house, coordinating event prep long after we’d gone to bed, ironing our outfits, delivering amazing speeches (& officiating our wedding!), waking up early to do every single step of my hair and make-up, preparing SIX ROUNDS of themed cocktails, learning cords on the wedding day so we could have acoustic entrance music… we’re crying just writing this.

It finally makes sense why people say their wedding was the happiest day of their lives. We have never felt so loved, so supported, so genuinely grateful for the way people showed up for us this past week in Iceland.

We would’ve been happy getting married in a dank cave by ourselves (just for the love), but our friends truly made this the wedding of our dreams 🥹

& special shout-out to our friend & favourite photographer @norrisniman for always bringing the vibes
  • There was a time I thought that great adventures could only happen alone, and I was so worried to lose all of the wild, independent, adventurous parts of myself in a relationship.

Within just a few weeks of meeting each other, James seemed to sense this, and told me if I needed to go climb another Aconcagua alone, he’d sit at base camp and be my support team. In those early days, it felt like exactly what I’d always wanted to hear.

But I quickly found that I was so wrong about the ways this relationship would change my life. We’ve been together for nearly every minute of the last few years and I have never ONCE wished to be on the mountain alone.

The right person elevates your life in a million small & powerful & surprising & wonderful ways, and now all of my great adventures are even greater with my extremely cool husband right there next to me.

Cheers to a lifetime of venturing into the unknown together @jamesalsobeyond 🖤✨

  • One of the best-kept secrets in the Albanian Alps is Buni Jezercës, the Great Valley of Lakes ✨

With Peaks of the Balkans and countless day hikes passing through the neighbouring Ropojana Valley, Buni Jezercës feels totally untouched— yet it’s home to the tallest & most spectacular peaks in the range, ripe for the scrambling.

Of all the incredible places we experienced hiking through these mountains for 12 days, this was truly the highlight! I’m already planning a return trip with a tent so we can post up for a bit and climb everything in sight…

>>> On a related note, my Peaks of the Balkans planning guide is finally done!! It is LONG but totally worth the read for anyone looking to tackle the most epic version of POB!

  • Can you guess which photos are from which?!

After visiting two summers in a row, we’re convinced that Montenegro is the new Dolomites (that’s right, these are ALL from Montenegro!). Amazing trail infrastructure and incredible limestone peaks, but without the crowds 🤩🤩

Photos from Prokletije National Park, Maganik Mountains, and Durmitor National Park— we can’t wait to get back to explore more!!

  • And finally, some photos from the Montenegro section of our Peaks of the Balkans route!

We totally fell in love with the hiking in this country on our road trip last year (there are SO many amazing mountains here!!!), and the most recent adventure just cemented what we already knew: Montenegro is one of Europe’s most underrated hiking destinations.

  • The second-youngest country in the world and still flying under the radar for most travellers, Kosovo completely surprised us!

We spent 5 days hiking through Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park as part of our Peaks of the Balkans loop, and the limestone peaks, alpine lakes, newly-minted via ferrata routes, and warm Balkan hospitality were a genuine highlight. I have a feeling you’ll be seeing more of little Kosovo soon!

  • Just a few of my favourite photos from the Albania section of our 12-day Peaks of the Balkans hike! These days contained some of the biggest alpine scenery anywhere on the trail, and we were pretty star-struck as we hiked through Valbona, Theth, Prosllopit Pass, the Great Valley of Lakes, and up to the summit of Maja Bojës!

  • We just wrapped up an incredible 12-day Peaks of the Balkans circuit that brought us through 220km of the Accursed Mountains in Albania, Montenegro, and Kosovo, plus 7 additional summits off the standard route. And it was AMAZING!! 🍾🥂

This is the first multi-day hike I’ve done since my knee surgery last year, and there’s still a loongggggg road ahead to get back to where I was athletically… but this feels like a significant milestone on that journey.

And aside from the physical one, this year has taken me on a rather unexpected emotional journey, too. The peril of tying too much of your self-worth to any one activity is the inevitable sense of loss that results from *suddenly not being able to do that activity*. And I spent a lot of this past year asking myself “without the mountains and without the next harder summit, who even are you?”

Forced to experience life at a slower pace, to do things I would have previously dismissed as “too easy” and to find personal satisfaction in them anyway, a lot of unintended growth happened. I found a way to still be me on the easy route, or even on no route at all. Particularly as I navigate the realities of chronic injury and illness where the next surgery may be lurking just around the corner, this has brought me some peace.

But DANG, it feels really good to be here RIGHT NOW, doing what I love in this fragile but mobile body 🏔️🖤

We would’ve been happy getting married in a dank cave by ourselves (just for the love), but our friends truly made this the wedding of our dreams 🥹 & special shout-out to our friend & favourite photographer @norrisniman for always bringing the vibes

There was a time I thought that great adventures could only happen alone, and I was so worried to lose all of the wild, independent, adventurous parts of myself in a relationship.

One of the best-kept secrets in the Albanian Alps is Buni Jezercës, the Great Valley of Lakes ✨

Can you guess which photos are from which?!

And finally, some photos from the Montenegro section of our Peaks of the Balkans route!

We totally fell in love with the hiking in this country on our road trip last year (there are SO many amazing mountains here!!!), and the most recent adventure just cemented what we already knew: Montenegro is one of Europe’s most underrated hiking destinations.

🔗 check out our road-trip itinerary: brookebeyond.com/montenegro-itinerary (ALSO IN BIO)

The second-youngest country in the world and still flying under the radar for most travellers, Kosovo completely surprised us!
