What to do in Durban, South Africa

19 December 2017

Last Updated on 9 July 2026

Without the allure of Cape Town or the proximity to game parks of Johannesburg, Durban is so often overlooked on trips through South Africa. If not for a National Geographic article from several years ago, I would have entirely missed it myself— thankfully, I obsessed over that article, dog-earing it and jotting notes down so that one day I could visit this incredible city, with the largest Indian population outside of India, to enjoy its curry, beaches, and inimitable culture.  Here’s a quick guide to Durban, including how to get around, what to do, and where to stay.

Getting around Durban

The cheapest and easiest way to explore Durban is by Uber. We had a car and actually found it incredibly inconvenient to search for parking, not to mention the most hectic drive of our lives through the city’s chaotic centre. Downtown Durban can also be very sketchy, so it’s best just to take an Uber or a taxi directly to your destination rather than parking 1km away and walking around unnecessarily.

There are also group taxis or little minibuses that ferry people around the city for pocket change. I would not really advise this, unless you’re in a group and you feel really confident getting around. We ended up getting swindled by a driver because we had “foreigner” practically stamped on our wide-eyed faces, so don’t make the same mistake. Thankfully, it’s a lot more pleasant on the coast, so you should be able to walk around the beach without the same uneasiness.

What to do in Durban

Lounge about on the Golden Mile

Possibly the biggest draw for South Africans to Durban is the beaches. Set on the Indian Ocean (so plenty warm) and covered in golden sand, it’s hard to escape the appeal and even harder to resist taking a dip. We visited the beach on a Sunday during school holidays, though, so the crowds were positively out of hand and we didn’t spend more than a few hours hanging around. Despite all the people, it was still a beautiful spot, framed with little curio shops, restaurants, and cafes, and I’m eager to make another visit to this expansive seaside.

Explore the bustling Victoria Street Market

For a touch of shopping and just an all around experience, visit the enormous Victoria Street Markets in downtown Durban. Two floors are occupied by beaded jewellery, wood animals, hats, dresses, Indian spices, home goods, artwork, and honestly more than I can even list. The prices are shockingly low, so expect to come home with a dozen pairs of earrings (no regrets) and quite a few stories.

Go on safari in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park

From Durban, it’s possible to book a day-trip or a multi-day safari in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, Africa’s oldest Nature Reserve located about 300km north-west. The park is perhaps best known for its large population of white rhino, but it’s also possible to get up close with all the Big 5 safari animals (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo).

Rhino crossing the road

Brave the hectic Durban city centre

Although it may not be the big city you think of when someone mentions South Africa, Durban still has a vibrant (and sometimes even overwhelming) city centre filled with people, vehicular mayhem, and plenty of cheap shops selling everything from wigs to electronics. If you’re extremely adventurous, hop in one of the city taxis: little minibuses that drive as if the rules of the road are a mere suggestion (our time in the taxi did not last long). Despite the chaos of actually getting into the city, it is an adventure beyond compare and an absolutely essential part of the Durban experience.

Downtown Durban

Gorge yourself on curry and bunny chow

The quintessential Durban experience, despite all of my other excited remarks, really is just eating— dig into the phenomenal and authentic Indian curries and indulge in the Durban-style curry in a bread bowl, “bunny chow”. This dish, often just referred to as “a bunny”, is the entire reason I wanted to visit in the first place and I am delighted to report not an ounce of disappointment.

Where to stay in Durban

The absolute best place to stay in Durban is right on the Indian Ocean, along the Golden Mile. A number of luxurious hotels and resorts line the beach and offer great views and a long list of ammenities. For those on a budget, though, you’re likely to end up off the coast. We stayed in Berea, a neighbourhood in the hills just a few minutes out of Durban and found it to be really pleasant and safe, but still within easy reach of the city. Plus, our Airbnb was $25 a night for two people in an adorable self-contained granny flat, so you just can’t beat the price.

Travel tips for Durban

  • As I mentioned previously, Durban’s city centre can be really overwhelming and super sketchy, so it’s important to exercise extreme caution. Do not have your camera visible when you’re walking along the streets and don’t even hold your phone in your hand— a local woman pulled us into her shop when she saw us doing this and warned that we were making ourselves obvious targets for theft. She recommended stepping into shops to ask for directions rather than using your phone or asking people on the street.
  • Another popular scam in the city is men “helping” you find a parking spot and then demanding money to “keep an eye on your car” while you visit the market, etc. This is a really uncomfortable situation, but we feigned confidence and refused to pay up, worrying the whole time we were away that our car was going to be either smashed to bits or missing when we returned. Absolutely do not leave anything valuable in your car and make sure you have theft insurance! Another reason not to hire a car in the first place.
  • Although most restaurants and shops will accept major credit cards, you’ll still want cash (Rand) for market purchases or street food.
  • Durban is a good place to visit either before or after Johannesburg, as flights between the two cities are incredibly cheap (usually under $50).

  • Neither of us has ever been the type to fantasise about our someday-wedding. We didn’t have a colour palette or a dream venue or a pinterest board (apparent blasphemy), and when we got engaged nearly 20 months ago, we had truly no idea if we’d be able to pull off an international wedding with friends scattered all over the world.

But the idea for a wild Icelandic wedding grew out of our deep love for this island— somewhere we feel endlessly inspired, returning again & again to wander remote valleys and scramble up dramatic mountains and camp beneath glaciers.

It became our dream that we’d bring all our favourite people together here not just for one evening, but for an epic week-long adventure— the most Brooke & James version of a wedding we could imagine.

And so we rented a huge party house (with a 20-person hot tub 🔥) in a quiet northern fjord and hoped it would all come together.

We soaked, we hiked, we danced, we saw about one million puffins, we ate & drank like it was going out of style, and we enjoyed long days with everyone who travelled SO FARKING FAR (up to 35hrs 🇦🇺) to be here with us. Our hearts have never been so full.

There are a million thank yas owed to our friends for making this week possible. The way we had people out gathering flowers for our tables, cooking shared meals for the whole house, coordinating event prep long after we’d gone to bed, ironing our outfits, delivering amazing speeches (& officiating our wedding!), waking up early to do every single step of my hair and make-up, preparing SIX ROUNDS of themed cocktails, learning cords on the wedding day so we could have acoustic entrance music… we’re crying just writing this.

It finally makes sense why people say their wedding was the happiest day of their lives. We have never felt so loved, so supported, so genuinely grateful for the way people showed up for us this past week in Iceland.

We would’ve been happy getting married in a dank cave by ourselves (just for the love), but our friends truly made this the wedding of our dreams 🥹

& special shout-out to our friend & favourite photographer @norrisniman for always bringing the vibes
  • There was a time I thought that great adventures could only happen alone, and I was so worried to lose all of the wild, independent, adventurous parts of myself in a relationship.

Within just a few weeks of meeting each other, James seemed to sense this, and told me if I needed to go climb another Aconcagua alone, he’d sit at base camp and be my support team. In those early days, it felt like exactly what I’d always wanted to hear.

But I quickly found that I was so wrong about the ways this relationship would change my life. We’ve been together for nearly every minute of the last few years and I have never ONCE wished to be on the mountain alone.

The right person elevates your life in a million small & powerful & surprising & wonderful ways, and now all of my great adventures are even greater with my extremely cool husband right there next to me.

Cheers to a lifetime of venturing into the unknown together @jamesalsobeyond 🖤✨

  • One of the best-kept secrets in the Albanian Alps is Buni Jezercës, the Great Valley of Lakes ✨

With Peaks of the Balkans and countless day hikes passing through the neighbouring Ropojana Valley, Buni Jezercës feels totally untouched— yet it’s home to the tallest & most spectacular peaks in the range, ripe for the scrambling.

Of all the incredible places we experienced hiking through these mountains for 12 days, this was truly the highlight! I’m already planning a return trip with a tent so we can post up for a bit and climb everything in sight…

>>> On a related note, my Peaks of the Balkans planning guide is finally done!! It is LONG but totally worth the read for anyone looking to tackle the most epic version of POB!

  • Can you guess which photos are from which?!

After visiting two summers in a row, we’re convinced that Montenegro is the new Dolomites (that’s right, these are ALL from Montenegro!). Amazing trail infrastructure and incredible limestone peaks, but without the crowds 🤩🤩

Photos from Prokletije National Park, Maganik Mountains, and Durmitor National Park— we can’t wait to get back to explore more!!

  • And finally, some photos from the Montenegro section of our Peaks of the Balkans route!

We totally fell in love with the hiking in this country on our road trip last year (there are SO many amazing mountains here!!!), and the most recent adventure just cemented what we already knew: Montenegro is one of Europe’s most underrated hiking destinations.

  • The second-youngest country in the world and still flying under the radar for most travellers, Kosovo completely surprised us!

We spent 5 days hiking through Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park as part of our Peaks of the Balkans loop, and the limestone peaks, alpine lakes, newly-minted via ferrata routes, and warm Balkan hospitality were a genuine highlight. I have a feeling you’ll be seeing more of little Kosovo soon!

  • Just a few of my favourite photos from the Albania section of our 12-day Peaks of the Balkans hike! These days contained some of the biggest alpine scenery anywhere on the trail, and we were pretty star-struck as we hiked through Valbona, Theth, Prosllopit Pass, the Great Valley of Lakes, and up to the summit of Maja Bojës!

  • We just wrapped up an incredible 12-day Peaks of the Balkans circuit that brought us through 220km of the Accursed Mountains in Albania, Montenegro, and Kosovo, plus 7 additional summits off the standard route. And it was AMAZING!! 🍾🥂

This is the first multi-day hike I’ve done since my knee surgery last year, and there’s still a loongggggg road ahead to get back to where I was athletically… but this feels like a significant milestone on that journey.

And aside from the physical one, this year has taken me on a rather unexpected emotional journey, too. The peril of tying too much of your self-worth to any one activity is the inevitable sense of loss that results from *suddenly not being able to do that activity*. And I spent a lot of this past year asking myself “without the mountains and without the next harder summit, who even are you?”

Forced to experience life at a slower pace, to do things I would have previously dismissed as “too easy” and to find personal satisfaction in them anyway, a lot of unintended growth happened. I found a way to still be me on the easy route, or even on no route at all. Particularly as I navigate the realities of chronic injury and illness where the next surgery may be lurking just around the corner, this has brought me some peace.

But DANG, it feels really good to be here RIGHT NOW, doing what I love in this fragile but mobile body 🏔️🖤

Neither of us has ever been the type to fantasise about our someday-wedding.

We would’ve been happy getting married in a dank cave by ourselves (just for the love), but our friends truly made this the wedding of our dreams 🥹 & special shout-out to our friend & favourite photographer @norrisniman for always bringing the vibes

There was a time I thought that great adventures could only happen alone, and I was so worried to lose all of the wild, independent, adventurous parts of myself in a relationship.

One of the best-kept secrets in the Albanian Alps is Buni Jezercës, the Great Valley of Lakes ✨

Can you guess which photos are from which?!

And finally, some photos from the Montenegro section of our Peaks of the Balkans route!

We totally fell in love with the hiking in this country on our road trip last year (there are SO many amazing mountains here!!!), and the most recent adventure just cemented what we already knew: Montenegro is one of Europe’s most underrated hiking destinations.

The second-youngest country in the world and still flying under the radar for most travellers, Kosovo completely surprised us!
