Driving or flying into Cape Town for the first time, it’s impossible to miss the enormous (and inarguably table-like) mountain that dominates the skyline of this beautiful coastal city. Table Mountain is more than just a good photo backdrop, though; it’s also the perfect vantage point from which to admire the other mountains, sparkling beaches, and bustling city streets that make up this South African metropolis. Mum and I soared nearly 800m to the top on a scenic cable car ride recently, and the view certainly did not disappoint.
All the details: Table Mountain
Cost: Return tickets for the cable car range from R277-293, depending on the time of day.
Getting there: If you don’t have a car, take an inexpensive Uber to the Lower Cable Car Station. From here, you can hike up the Mountain or take the scenic cable car.
Where to stay: When in Cape Town, stay in an Airbnb in the Greenpoint area on the Waterfront.
Top tips: Before you even head to the cable car station, check the weather to make sure there isn’t cloud cover or high winds (the cable car actually is cancelled quite often for winds). If it looks like there will be good visibility, then buy your tickets online while you’re queuing up (there is free wifi!).
