  • final summit in Bolivia: Illimani (6,438m) 🏔️✨ The imposing massif of Illimani absolutely dominates the skyline in La Paz, and after spending an entire month staring at the mountain from our 25th-floor apartment, it was pretty incredible to find myself on the summit— just one day before our departing flights. Even with so much “extra” time, we still came right down to the wire on the weather window for Illimani! With James sick at High Camp, I headed to the summit alone with our guide after several sleepless nights. And just like clockwork, above 6000m on a -15C alpine start, I was reminded pretty powerfully of my last high-altitude expedition (up Aconcagua) where I’d sworn I’d never do this again 😂 The rush on the summit is always enough to make me forget, though, and there’s such a special satisfaction in reaching ✨la cumbre✨ after a glorious struggle through freezing, oxygen-poor air. We definitely do it for days like this! Not a cloud in the sky, almost windless, what a time to be alive at 6,438m 🤩 — #illimani #cordillerareal #bolivia #bolivianmountaineering #lacumbre
  • if you’ve ever thought bed should be on the ground, temps should be sub-zero, and air should have WAY less oxygen, allow me to recommend: 📍 Illimani High Camp (5,500m) in all honesty, this was one of the most spectacular nights I’ve EVER spent in a tent, and Pachamama even hooked us up with perfectly calm conditions ahead of the big day 🤩🤩 — #illimani #bolivia #cordillerareal #bolivianmountaineering #basecamp
  • Huayna Potosi (6,088m) 🏔️ Easily the most famous mountain in Bolivia, offered as a ‘beginner friendly’ climb (after a one-day training course) for travellers who’ve never even worn crampons before, and often marketed for as little as $60 to the backpacker crowds who’re happy to cut corners for the best deal… I’ll admit I didn’t have super high expectations for Huayna Potosi. Our ultimate goal in summiting was just to log some time at altitude— 6000m is another world, physiologically speaking, and I wanted James to experience the unique ✨agony✨ that is high-elevation mountaineering on an easier peak before we pushed even higher & harder over the coming months. The route is like a compacted highway up the glacier, and we found ourselves stuck behind enormous, slow-moving groups at the start of our freezing ascent. It took several hours settle into our own rhythm, and only after a few breathless pushes through loose snow to pass other rope teams… BUT THEN: the sunrise 🌅 Watching the first rays of light stretch above the clouds and set the entire Cordillera Real on fire, we were finally able to appreciate Huayna Potosi as more than just acclimatisation. This is a stunning mountain that we’d had the privilege of staring at from all of our previous 3 summits, and to finally be up here (first time over 6000m for James!) is a true accomplishment, regardless of the well-beaten track. We won’t soon forget this sunrise! 🥂 cheers to my husband for pushing through!! — #huaynapotosi #cordillerareal #bolivia #bolivianmountaineering #highaltitude
  • Our 2nd & 3rd summits in Bolivia: Tarija (5,350m) & Pequeño Alpamayo (5,425m) 🏔️ After overnighting at the incredibly simple (but comfortable & blissfully indoor) refugio near Chiar Khota Lagoon, we got a 1am alpine start towards the as-of-yet-unseen summit of Pequeño Alpamayo— hiding behind a cluster of mountains in the range. The route is incredibly interesting, climbing gradually to the summit of Tarija Peak before dropping 70m on Class 3 rock down to the glacier again, then ascending more steeply up to the pyramidal summit of Pequeño Alpamayo. All the while, glimpses of Huayna Potosi (our next objective) peeking through sherbet clouds across the valley! This was @jamesalsobeyond first true glacier climb and the varied ascent/descent over mixed terrain certainly kept things interesting, worthwhile prep for the much harder summits to come 😮‍💨 — #pequeñoalpamayo #bolivia #cordillerareal #tarija #bolivianmountaineering
  • We just wrapped up an entire month of high-elevation climbing in Bolivia and, for something that started out as acclimatisation for our “main event” in the Himalayas, these ended up being some of the coolest summits I’ve ever done! It’s been more than a decade since I’d last been here, and it was pretty amazing to see how La Paz has changed in that time— from a humble little Andean town to a vibrant world city. And of course, even more amazing to see the landscape from a totally new perspective, high above the clouds! With the luxury of time to acclimatise slowly, we rented an apartment in the city and started off our visit with about 10 days spent puffing around La Paz (3,650m) and nearby El Alto (4,150m)— the highest elevation city in the world— before heading into the mountains for summit attempt no.1 on Pico Austria! Pico Austria is just a hike, by far the easiest and least technical of all the summits we’d be attempting this month, but it was absolutely beautiful and a great opportunity to get to 5,350m and start breathing hard 😮‍💨 — #picoaustria #lapaz #bolivia #cordillerareal #bolivianmountaineering
  • Neither of us has ever been the type to fantasise about our someday-wedding. We didn’t have a colour palette or a dream venue or a pinterest board (apparent blasphemy), and when we got engaged nearly 20 months ago, we had truly no idea if we’d be able to pull off an international wedding with friends scattered all over the world. But the idea for a wild Icelandic wedding grew out of our deep love for this island— somewhere we feel endlessly inspired, returning again & again to wander remote valleys and scramble up dramatic mountains and camp beneath glaciers. It became our dream that we’d bring all our favourite people together here not just for one evening, but for an epic week-long adventure— the most Brooke & James version of a wedding we could imagine. And so we rented a huge party house (with a 20-person hot tub 🔥) in a quiet northern fjord and hoped it would all come together. We soaked, we hiked, we danced, we saw about one million puffins, we ate & drank like it was going out of style, and we enjoyed long days with everyone who travelled SO FARKING FAR (up to 35hrs 🇦🇺) to be here with us. Our hearts have never been so full. There are a million thank yas owed to our friends for making this week possible. The way we had people out gathering flowers for our tables, cooking shared meals for the whole house, coordinating event prep long after we’d gone to bed, ironing our outfits, delivering amazing speeches (& officiating our wedding!), waking up early to do every single step of my hair and make-up, preparing SIX ROUNDS of themed cocktails, learning cords on the wedding day so we could have acoustic entrance music… we’re crying just writing this. It finally makes sense why people say their wedding was the happiest day of their lives. We have never felt so loved, so supported, so genuinely grateful for the way people showed up for us this past week in Iceland. We would’ve been happy getting married in a dank cave by ourselves (just for the love), but our friends truly made this the wedding of our dreams 🥹 & special shout-out to our friend & favourite photographer @norrisniman for always bringing the vibes
  • There was a time I thought that great adventures could only happen alone, and I was so worried to lose all of the wild, independent, adventurous parts of myself in a relationship. Within just a few weeks of meeting each other, James seemed to sense this, and told me if I needed to go climb another Aconcagua alone, he’d sit at base camp and be my support team. In those early days, it felt like exactly what I’d always wanted to hear. But I quickly found that I was so wrong about the ways this relationship would change my life. We’ve been together for nearly every minute of the last few years and I have never ONCE wished to be on the mountain alone. The right person elevates your life in a million small & powerful & surprising & wonderful ways, and now all of my great adventures are even greater with my extremely cool husband right there next to me. Cheers to a lifetime of venturing into the unknown together @jamesalsobeyond 🖤✨ . . . photos by our infinitely talented friend @norrisniman
  • One of the best-kept secrets in the Albanian Alps is Buni Jezercës, the Great Valley of Lakes ✨ With Peaks of the Balkans and countless day hikes passing through the neighbouring Ropojana Valley, Buni Jezercës feels totally untouched— yet it’s home to the tallest & most spectacular peaks in the range, ripe for the scrambling. Of all the incredible places we experienced hiking through these mountains for 12 days, this was truly the highlight! I’m already planning a return trip with a tent so we can post up for a bit and climb everything in sight… >>> On a related note, my Peaks of the Balkans planning guide is finally done!! It is LONG but totally worth the read for anyone looking to tackle the most epic version of POB! 🔗 brookebeyond.com/peaks-of-the-balkans — #peaksofthebalkans #bunijezerces #majajezerce #albania #albanianalps
  • Can you guess which photos are from which?! After visiting two summers in a row, we’re convinced that Montenegro is the new Dolomites (that’s right, these are ALL from Montenegro!). Amazing trail infrastructure and incredible limestone peaks, but without the crowds 🤩🤩 Photos from Prokletije National Park, Maganik Mountains, and Durmitor National Park— we can’t wait to get back to explore more!! __ #peaksofthebalkans #durmitornationalpark #prokletije #accursedmountains #dolomites

We definitely do it for days like this! Not a cloud in the sky, almost windless, what a time to be alive at 6,438m 🤩 — #illimani #cordillerareal #bolivia #bolivianmountaineering #lacumbre
final summit in Bolivia: Illimani (6,438m) 🏔️✨ The imposing massif of Illimani absolutely dominates the skyline in La Paz, and after spending an entire month staring at the mountain from our 25th-floor apartment, it was pretty incredible to find myself on the summit— just one day before our departing flights. Even with so much “extra” time, we still came right down to the wire on the weather window for Illimani! if you’ve ever thought bed should be on the ground, temps should be sub-zero, and air should have WAY less oxygen, allow me to recommend: 📍 Illimani High Camp (5,500m) in all honesty, this was one of the most spectacular nights I’ve EVER spent in a tent, and Pachamama even hooked us up with perfectly calm conditions ahead of the big day 🤩🤩 — #illimani #bolivia #cordillerareal #bolivianmountaineering #basecamp

Huayna Potosi (6,088m) 🏔️ Easily the most famous mountain in Bolivia, offered as a ‘beginner friendly’ climb (after a one-day training course) for travellers who’ve never even worn crampons before, and often marketed for as little as $60 to the backpacker crowds who’re happy to cut corners for the best deal… I’ll admit I didn’t have super high expectations for Huayna Potosi.

Our 2nd & 3rd summits in Bolivia: Tarija (5,350m) & Pequeño Alpamayo (5,425m) 🏔️ After overnighting at the incredibly simple (but comfortable & blissfully indoor) refugio near Chiar Khota Lagoon, we got a 1am alpine start towards the as-of-yet-unseen summit of Pequeño Alpamayo— hiding behind a cluster of mountains in the range.

We just wrapped up an entire month of high-elevation climbing in Bolivia and, for something that started out as acclimatisation for our “main event” in the Himalayas, these ended up being some of the coolest summits I’ve ever done!
We just wrapped up an entire month of high-elevation climbing in Bolivia and, for something that started out as acclimatisation for our “main event” in the Himalayas, these ended up being some of the coolest summits I’ve ever done! Neither of us has ever been the type to fantasise about our someday-wedding.
