  • climbing our way through the Middle East 🧗🏻‍♀️✨ After climbing in Jordan’s incredible Wadi Rum desert the previous month, we were eager to get back on the rock during our time in Egypt— and there’s no better place than the Sinai Peninsula. Bedouins have been climbing these mountains for centuries, but bolted sport routes have only appeared in recent decades as European climbers partnered with local communities to establish more official routes in the canyons around Dahab & beyond. The fantastic team at @egyptclimbing set us up with a local guide who drove us out into the desert & unleashed us on the shaded red granite of Wadi Gnai. I’ve climbed almost exclusively on sandstone & limestone in recent years, so it took a minute to adjust to a totally different rock experience, but we ended up having so much fun!   • Planning a scuba trip to the Red Sea several years ago, Dahab first popped onto my radar as the site of one of the most exciting adventures I’d EVER heard of: an overnight camel diving safari. For several decades, @desertdiversdahab has been leading intrepid divers up the remote coast of the Sinai Peninsula to access some of the region’s most pristine marine environments— a shore diving paradise completely devoid of people. And finally, after years of dreaming about it, we set off on camelback for an adventure of our own that was every bit as incredible as I’d imagined.   • Standing at 2,285m (7,500ft), Mt Sinai is a sacred pilgrimage route for thousands of annual visitors— believed by Christians, Jews & Muslims to be the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments ⛰️🐪 While most hike Mt Sinai under the stars for sunrise, we switched it up completely & headed out with our friends from @desertdiversdahab smack in the middle of the day. There was a lot of sweating, but the reward was cresting over the summit without another soul in sight, staring out at the vast Sinai desert in bug-eyed awe of a magical landscape that has captivated humans for millennia ☀️ On our way to the mountain, we also explored St Catherine’s Monastery, the oldest continuously operating Christian monastery in the world. Home to an unparalleled collection of ancient manuscripts and icons—which, thanks to its remote Sinai location, survived unscathed during the Byzantine Iconoclasm—it’s a testament to the enduring significance of this sacred place. Perhaps most importantly, it was also home to an unparalleled number of cats. All of whom I stopped to snuggle.   • Bedouins have been using domesticated camels as transportation (& a source of milk) for thousands of years, and unlike some of the other places where you can ride camels internationally, the camels in Wadi Rum are truly happy, healthy & so well cared for. We had a really positive experience with every camel we interacted with in Wadi Rum & saw firsthand how important these animals are to Bedouin culture, as well as how lovingly they’re treated. If you’re considering a camel ride, we’d strongly recommend skipping busy sites like Petra (& definitely the Egyptian Pyramids or Mt Sinai) where camels are often overworked & poorly treated. Instead, support ethical camel tourism in Wadi Rum, where the welfare of these incredible animals is a priority. climbing our way through the Middle East 🧗🏻‍♀️✨ After climbing in Jordan’s incredible Wadi Rum desert the previous month, we were eager to get back on the rock during our time in Egypt— and there’s no better place than the Sinai Peninsula. Bedouins have been climbing these mountains for centuries, but bolted sport routes have only appeared in recent decades as European climbers partnered with local communities to establish more official routes in the canyons around Dahab & beyond. The fantastic team at @egyptclimbing set us up with a local guide who drove us out into the desert & unleashed us on the shaded red granite of Wadi Gnai. I’ve climbed almost exclusively on sandstone & limestone in recent years, so it took a minute to adjust to a totally different rock experience, but we ended up having so much fun! Standing at 2,285m (7,500ft), Mt Sinai is a sacred pilgrimage route for thousands of annual visitors— believed by Christians, Jews & Muslims to be the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments ⛰️🐪 While most hike Mt Sinai under the stars for sunrise, we switched it up completely & headed out with our friends from @desertdiversdahab smack in the middle of the day. There was a lot of sweating, but the reward was cresting over the summit without another soul in sight, staring out at the vast Sinai desert in bug-eyed awe of a magical landscape that has captivated humans for millennia ☀️ On our way to the mountain, we also explored St Catherine’s Monastery, the oldest continuously operating Christian monastery in the world. Home to an unparalleled collection of ancient manuscripts and icons—which, thanks to its remote Sinai location, survived unscathed during the Byzantine Iconoclasm—it’s a testament to the enduring significance of this sacred place. Perhaps most importantly, it was also home to an unparalleled number of cats. All of whom I stopped to snuggle.
